They don't specify exactly when the console passed 1M. Actually the guy from Nintendo said the console sold "more than 1 million", and I'm pretty sure he's announcing it right now because it's the Wii's anniversary. Moreover he speaks about 12 months, which means the Wii passed 1M during the last month.
So I think VGChartz is quite accurate.
