Frankly, I don't know. It helped their userbase and made a lot of people aware of the xbox. But having the games appear with extras somewhere else might have hurt reputation, and not having FFXIII pretty much settles it to NOT be the console for that genre.
Whether it made them money, who knows. Likely not many of those time-exclusives were for free.
