Of course it was!

Nintendo jumps from system to system way to much. I mean the only reason the "DS" is doing so well is because the there was the DS "Phat", DS Lite, DSi, DSi XX/XL now there is this 3DS.

BTW I've got to say this.

NINTENDO RIPPING OFF SONY!!!! 3D is Sony's techology! :)

^THis. I was also thinking of getting a newer DS soon but this just stopped my purchase for now

ANd why are there so many posts on how Nintendo knows better than thou and I know this because I read articles on the internet just like everyone else but I can't seem to answer a simple question without protecting my beloved master Nintendo as he pays for my house and guarded my dog being run over by the 3vil S0Ny?

It is a bit weired on timing this time around, who knows we might get some good answers by E3. So until then, unless you own Nintendo, SPECULATE

There's been a lot of companies working on 3d technology. For example, the 3d tech that some speculators think will work is developed by someone other than Sony (some kind of 3d that only works on screens X size or smaller).  Sony is neither the first nor the pioneers of modern 3d tech. Just like anything video game related you have to look at PCs who have been doing it for a while now.

Yeah I agree it's weird timing and I'm very curious as to why now of all times.

Maybe to steal thunder from the PSP 5 year anniversary! It's as plausible as any other answer at this point.

Companies are only just now getting into 3D tech because Sony is building it for everything. Movies, Games, TV, etc.

They are also using the processes that Sony is/has put into place.

OK first off the 3d push in movies from James Cameron's Avatar and that is produced by 20th Century Fox a subsidary of News Corp and has nothing to do with Sony. BTW in case you are wondering the push was deliberate on James Cameron's behalf. Dreamworks Animation also has been pushing 3D and that is paramount which is owned by Viacom again not Sony. You also have the Zemickis animation films produced by Time Warner. Sony has done nothing to push 3-D in Movies.

Samsung has been pushing 3-D tech for TVs as well as sharp and Hitachi. Sharp has a 3-D enabled laptop and Hitachi a 3-D phone. Panasonic produced the first 3-D video camcorder. In fact with everything Sony has been behind the curve in pushing 3-D allowing others to trail blaze teh way.

However Sony will be important when it comes to popularizing it.

Edit:

Before it is brought up. Sony cameras were used to shoot Avatar. However one of the reasons it won an academy award for cinematography  was that none of the cameras were designed to shoot in 3-D so Vince Pace and James Cameron had to actually create there own rig and modify the cameras appropiately. The cameras include HDC-F950, HDC-1500 and the Cine-Altra series which are very nice cameras but not 3-D
