It should be interesting to see how they implement this ... I didn't read through the patent that someone mentioned earlier, but I wouldn't be (that) surprised if they simply used several mostly-transparent LCD stacked together with a think piece of glass separating them. With the technology that is being developed for bendable lcd screens, there might be some very inexpensive displays that could be used to do this mainly because they are inadequate for what they’re being designed for.
While this would (obviously) not be true 3D, with a two screens you could have a limited effect, with 3 the effect might actually be pretty decent, and with 5 or more it could be quite nice. Of course, with this approach the screen would have to be thicker than a conventional LCD screen would be; and I’m not sure if you could really do this with a portable device.
