About 10 years ago we had a gaming revolution which rapidly expanded the market. The rise of the Playstation meant that the "Core" gamers who loved platforming, adventure games, and 2D rpgs were no longer as important as the "Casual" gamers who enjoyed sports games, racing games, stealth games, FPS and anything 'Mature'.
Those of us who are old enough to remember know that the key franchises change, that the "Core" gamer who is important today will not always rule the roost.
