You are absolutely right that you can whiz through a FF game without doing sidequests and whatever (and they are stilly linear whether you do them or not) but the focus on those is the story, not the repetitive gameplay. Even if you don't do the sidequests, you still get the experience the designers were going for (assuming it's a good FF). With Heavenly Sword, you can whiz through the game randomly mashing buttons and you don't get the experience the developers were hoping for.

You're also right in saying that just you can play a game a certain way doesn't mean you should. I'm going to play whatever way is the easiest or makes most sense to me. In Heavenly Sword, randomly mashing buttons is the easiest that makes the most sense. I can mess up a combo but I can't mess up mashing buttons. The game also encourages this behavior by doing everything for me from moving to doing finishing moves.

Once again, Heavenly Sword may have tried to be a deep game but it came out an incredibly short button masher.

Ah, you said a vital thing there; "the focus is on the story". Despite the albeit repetitive gameplay (despite the deep combat system, Im not going to deny the combat can get repitive, but thats true with anything), the story behind heavenly sword is fantastic. If you lower yourself to button mashing without looking at the screen and ignoring the storyline, then youre robbing yourself of a great experience which is what the developers intended.

But is the focus of Heavenly Sword the story and its characters?  I have heard that the game does have a nice story with some fantastic voice acting, but it's still an action game at heart and people who like action games are the target audience.

Well I actually think it focus's on both, they put huge emphasis on the mo-cap and facial expressions and such, definitely a viewer if you ask me, I'm going to agree with Squall and say I'm actually glad you made it so far mashing buttons :) I was REALLY big on diving into the combo system and I got a lot out of the game, I'm glad you were able to progress while simply mashing buttons ^_^, I wish they'd done something similar with Ninja Gaiden Black LOL
