No, GC was mostly doomed from the beginning. With online play, they might have been able to fend off the Xbox (since it really made its push ahead with Halo 2, i think), but i've postulated before that the generation was pretty much destined to go to the PS2, given when the PS2 launched. There was nothing anyone could have done to win.
