this reminds me off when by fat ps2 bricked for a 3rd time. i was at my local EB and the guy over the counter told me the ps2 slim is having shortages everywhere. apparently a shipment was coming over and the ship got stuck, so sony flew in helicopters to rescue the stock and had them flown in.
i dont think it is silly of sony. after all, their console was doomed to fail and sony probably thought it is better to play it safe. however, it is obvious they have been holding back some of the stock for big releases.
