Revisionist history. Game Gear was a successful competitor, with wide support that also hit significant marketshare.

It only sold 11 million, less than a tenth of the market place. Far from a strong competitor.

The original GB only sold ~40m before Game Gear was officially discontinued in 1996. During it's active lifecycle GG was a serious competitor, PSP is hardly Nintendo's first in the handheld arena.
