Cartridges couldn't hold much media,

Actually that's a misconception, cartridges being a solid state format can hold as much as you want, its main problem is the bigger the cartridge the more expensive, this was acutally the problem devs had with cartridges and why many chose to compress data, you could easily get a cartridge to fit the data you have on a CD provided you want to pay for it, it's why Nintendo and publishers charged more for large games during the N64 era. Cartridges themselves don't actually affect the quality of the data on them.
