The problem with Sony's strategy in terms of the marketing and pricing of this thing is they are essentially in a lose lose situation. They say they are trying to market to the "casual" audience, yet most reasonable people would assume that most casual gamers don't own a PS3, so they are faced with a price of $400+ for PS3 vs $200 for a Wii bundled with a game. Which do you think most would pick?

But on the other hand, if Sony was just to market this primarily to hardcore gamers and their existing fan base, they are severely limiting their potential user base with this peripheral. Since there are only 32 million PS3s out there, that means the absolute MOST sales they could achieve with this add on would be 32 million, since most people likely won't fork $300 on a PS3 just for this.

This is the problem with add ons for consoles late in the game. It is limited on the userbase, because in order to get the Move, you NEED to also have a PS3. But I'm willing to bet that most people seeing the move who don't have a PS3 wouldn't buy one just for that feature, especially if you consider the price. So this add on is pointless from a business perspective. Sony would have been much better off to simply bit the bullet on the PS3 and save this for the PS4, where they could start fresh.

This my friend is what I call wishful thinking.

I am betting you right now that there will be $299 bundle with Move, anyone wants that bet.

E

If by wishful thinking you mean "logical thinking," you'd be correct. I might actually get a PS3 with this motion controller if Sony can prove to me they are actually serious about supporting it and make some great games that use it well. I'm not "wishing" anything. If Sony proves they are serious about motion control and make games that appeal to me, they will get my support. If not, I will stick exclusively to the Wii, it's as simple as that.

All I am saying is there is a reason add ons often fail. They limit the potential userbase, and create a barrier for those who want it but DON'T own the console by adding more to the price. Consumers who want motion controls are going to be faced with a (probaly) $400 PS3 with motion, or a Wii for half the price. So are essentially back to where we started in the gen, where you could get a Wii for half the price of a PS3. The goal of Sony should be to make the PS3 cheaper, not tack on more expensive hardware. They are fracturing their userbase further which they've already done by the endless PS3 skus.

I guess its possible Sony could manage a $300 bundle by the end of the year, but this would be under the assumption that sony would have to drop the price of the PS3 yet again, which I doubt they can afford to do as they've already docked 50% off the value of the console in less than 3 years. Or if they don't drop the price of the PS3, you are basically saying they are willing to give the add on away for free, but why the hell would they do that if they sold it for $99 separately?
