That is an awesome theory, and one that I've never heard before. MS' stocks were getting flat and potential investors needed incentive. However, I tend to believe that the reason they entered the game market in particular (aside from the fact that it wouldn't take much effort for them to build a console) was to directly combat Sony. Sony was taking over the living room entertainment centre, and MS wanted it for themselves. So, they slapped together some computer parts, made a console that was much more powerful than PS2, made it look sleek and sexy, and shipped it to gaming outlets everywhere. Even though they failed miserably in the marketshare area, they took a sizable chunk out of Sony's 'mindshare', if you follow me. Simply put, if Sony was not already in the business, MS likely would never have jumped in. |
I'm assuming you are talking about the original Xbox in bold up top. I think you are the only person in the world who thinks that the original Xbox is sleek and sexy. I'm sorry I couldn't help myself.
As for the rest of the post, I agree to a certain extent, but not whole-heartedly. I don't think MS and Sony were ever in DIRECT competition until MS decided to release the Xbox. I agree with the post from Eugene a bit more. The only part I don't agree with Eugene, is the part where you say MS was happy with the profit they were making. That is the whole point of getting more investors and expanding markets. IT ALL COMES DOWN TO MAKING DOUGH.
