More likely imo (due to pricepoints and exchange rates) they're just taking the largest loss per unit in America, and have since been more "stingy" with supply allocation until volumes decrease costs sufficiently. Are Japan and Europe seeing similar mass shortages? I'd say it's probably the same deal with Nintendo and Wii, only replace "largest loss" with "smallest profit". |
Short term that makes sense, but they're still going into one of their best months since launch with few units to go around. God of War is really only popular in North America, and it's Sony's most popular franchise in the region after Gran Turismo. This is their last chance to really move units via software aside from Gran Turismo, and I doubt they'd pass up the opportunity to get more consoles into people's homes just to save a few bucks in the short term.
And they seem to have plenty of spare stock to go around (at least in Japan), which could be making its way to North America. Stock costs the same to manufacture no matter what, so might as well make some revenue by selling them in North Amerca rather them having them sit on a shelf elsewhere.
And what about Final Fantasy? Let's say somebody finally decides to pick up a ps3 for Final Fantasy. They look around for awhile and have no luck in finding one, so they go grab a 360 bundle instead.
It just seems like a missed opportunity all around.
