Lesson X in videogame sales: Internet hype does not guarantee good sales. |
Kind of does... if the game is actually very good, the hype will help and when reviewers supports it, it works.
Uncharted 2 - word of mouth, hype, awards > great sales
The Conduit - no word of mouth, hype, critical flop > bad sales
And there is a difference between hype from the developer talking crap about how great that thing is (when it's not), or critics talking about how great it is.
It doesn't work allways (Bayonetta), but in most cases yes (Dead Space, Bio Shock, Uncharted 2).
MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising
