It's because a large portion of the elitist gaming media WANTS to see the Wii fail, so they cling to any shred of evidence that they can use to support their claims, even if it's freaking Cammie Dunnaway speculation about Wii naturally declining in sales during its 5th year.
Maybe in 2012, when Wii sales DO finally hit a signifiant decline, they'll finally be right! At which point they will just say, HA! we told you so! It's all a big joke really...
