so, not the motion controls, the HD graphics, the giant leaps forward in technology used, blu-ray or online multiplayer? |
- Motion Controls - important and we have seen some great motion control games, but they aren't quite the carrot that achievements/trophies are.
- HD Graphics - while they are nice and pretty, they are actually hurting games since making a game a AAA game (which you almost have to do these days) means a giant budget and giant risk.
- Leaps in technology - see above
- Blu-Ray - cool movie format brah
- online multiplayer - I wouldn't call this something new to this gen and I would also call this something that helps as many games as it hurts. Now even things like Bioshock absolutely must have multiplayer or else it's a dud. This takes away from the single player experience and some people just want a single player experience.
Don't get me wrong, all of those above things (except BlueRay) are very important things that matter no matter how much I downplay them, but achievements really were just a genius idea. Unifying them was just a stroke of brilliance.
I think the only thing that really compares and is arguable as to the biggest innovation is motion controls. I downplay them a bit because I've gotten over them but they are important, I just believe achievements are more important. Of course achievements didn't bring 50 million or so new gamers to the market so that's a pretty big thing, but meh, whatever, my opinion.
