I think you should examine the story again, because you clearly missed some things
He didn't go back in time to make himself evil at all. I don't think it's clearly described what happened in the future, but it's alluded to that Kesseler (future Cole) was unable to defeat something called the Beast.
So what Kesseler did is go back in time to create an alternate history (hence it being a one way trip, he's altered the future). One where he would force the past Cole (your character) to get his powers sooner than Kesseler did in his timeline, and one where he would become stronger, faster than Kesseler did. All in the name of being strong enough to defeat the Beast whenever it comes.
