Nintendo kinda did the same thing with the Zelda series. First they made Wind Waker, which was just an amazing game. The fans complained about the game being too different, and Nintendo made TP which, while being an amazing game, wasn't as creative as Wind Waker was.
From the first announcements of Metroid Prime, people had been complaining about the first person perspective. Now, Nintendo is making a 3rd person Metroid. That is not coincidence and I have no doubt it won't be as good as the Primes.
