This is what I do when I first get a game:
What ever's the hardest mode available, go for it first. Even in games that allow you to transfer stats/items/upgrades from lower difficulty playthroughs to higher ones, still do it. The difficulty makes it more fun. When I unlock harder modes, I play those to.
This piece of advice will not help you at all.
