The NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64 and the PS2 all had one thing in common. None of their successors had backwards compatibility.
The PS2 is still selling units because the PS3 is still pretty expensive. When the next Nintendo console is released i believe it will be backwards compatible and cheap enough.
This of course is unless Nintendo keeps the Wii around as a "Third Pillar"
