I can agree with that.
I have no knowledge of the Australian law, so I can't say how the guys sentence will be handled, or whether he can declare personal bankruptcy or not. But I'd at least start with something that the guy can actually accomplish without completely wrecking the rest of his life - an excessive punishment benefits no one and hurts everyone in a situation like this.
