That's the very opposite of what actually happened. Nintendo outsourced the development of M&S to Sega. "The olympics game Sega makes"... do you actually believe this game would have sold remotely as well without Mario and the other N characters? It's a Mario game, first and foremost, and Sega were lucky Nintendo was willing to involve them. 

I didn't know they outsourced it

but then are most of the profits going to SEGA or nintendo?
