Kratos is a character based on emotion. He's not supposed to be all complex and stuff. Revenge and hate drives him. That's it. A lot of people may like him cuz he's "bad ass" and "macho" but if you've ever felt strong emotions of hate or anger or revenge that was rooted in lost love, only then can you really appreciate the character of Kratos. And he embodies those emotions just perfectly.
As for the storyline, it too is based on emotion and it is one of the best in video games. The symbolism of having to fight off an army of clones of himself to save his family was amazing stuff. That's poetry in a video game. Being stained with the ashes of your family is powerful stuff. But because it's a video game it is kind of looked at with an eye of immaturity compared to movies or books. |
I agree, some people think Kratos is "just an angry bald dude with paint all over him". But GoW is right up there with MGS in the story department.

As i see it, and i love the god of war games, but kratos is not the good guy in the story. he is just one of these charackters who needs to put the blame on someone else for his own faults. In the end he brought it all on himself by pledging his life to Ares. If Greek Mythology told us anything is that you don't get involved with the Gods, even their Gifts always bring suffering, as they don't really care for mortals at all. Actually it is said that the only Greek God who loved his subjects was Hades, he wanted the Souls of the dead to have their Peace.
Kratos even had his revenge on Ares, but he still wasn't happy, in fact in part 2 he became worse than Ares ever was, and Zeus tried to put a stop to it, just as these same Gods helped out Kratos in defeating Ares.
Their Problem is now that they underestimated Kratos and his Anger.
What do i want to say? We are NOT playing the good guy! Do i care? NO!
