I wouldn't say it's too late at all.

Anything server-side can be changed quite easily. Nothing would stop them from producing a firmware update on the Wii itself an getting rid of Wii Codes too.

So long as titles are pointed towards Nintendo's servers, this won't be too complex. The most difficult thing I could see would be how already released third party titles accept the new change. I mean friend lists, chat restrictions and so forth within the actual games. Would it make them crash? Bug out? Create exploits within Nintendo servers?

If Nintendo made a server-side community then it would make things even simpler.

Of course, talk is always easy.
