It seems that Sony fanboys have some kind of anti-Halo gene built into their structure. I am not a huge fan of FPS games, but I fail to see how Halo can be claimed to be "average in every way". The first game in the series was a revolutionary title in the realm of console first-person shooters, and the second game was a similar revolution in online-capable multiplayer console games. I have not played Halo 3 enough to really comment, but the level of polish applied to the title seems to uphold the standards of the first two.
