The fact that not may jrpgs have sold well this gen (part of that fact precisely because they have stayed console exclusive on the 360) that doesn't automatically qualify 800K WW sales of HIGH-BUDGET jrpgs as succesful. I'm sure you're missing some jrpgs that did better this gen. Just one example : TALES OF VESPERIA right now is over 830K, and it hasn't released outside of Japan for the PS3 so it's hardly a WW game. So please don't sound so definitive when you call it "that's it, that's it" like you're throwing out facts with your little list. I'll be willing to prove to you there quite a few more jrpgs that sold better that 800K WW for the PS2. but this doesn't deserve my time so whatever... (edit: look, Xenosaga, going by VGC data sold 450K in Japan alone...data is incomplete or who knows if accurate at all but well there you go) Lost Odyssey was an expensive game, its production assets showthis, I highly doubt they were aiming for 800K. So people saying "in your view many games are flops" yeah, whatever... |
Wow, ToV (multi-plat) beat LO by 10k. Yes, what a big mistake on my part. Let's just pretend that LO didn't beat ToV by almost 350k head-to-head on the 360. Yes, Lost Odyssey is a failure for performing so well versus an established IP that's been around for 15 years and has a strong, loyal fanbase.
Oh so the Vgchartz data isn't good enough for you when it comes to Xenosaga but it is when it comes to Valkyria Chronicles right?
Lost Odyssey was big budget but the point still stands that it is difficult for a jrpg to crack 800k in the market. Jrpgs are for the most part a niche genre in the west. Especially now that more and more westerners are getting sick of them.
Lost Odyssey especially performed well in the western market. 710k. List of PS2 jrpgs that sold 700k+ in the west: Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Dark Cloud, Dragon Quest. That's it. Are you not convinced? Or is your anti-Xbox bias going to prevent you from accepting the truth? This is a niche genre. It's not every day that you have a jrpg coming out that sells amazingly well.
