In terms of characters, storyline, and soundtrack, it's a step back compared to some of thep revious titles (IMO). Abyss pretty much took Symphonia's battle system and fixed most of the problems I had with it with the Flex Range LMB system. Looks like Namco agrees because all 3D Tales games afterwards have used Abyss's system as a basis, including ToS: Ratatoskr Knight. |
I disagree on all 3 accounts, but especially on characters. The characters in ToS were so much better developed than in previous tales games that it's not even funny. The plot was a little cliche, but it was much worse in older games and the music was just as good (not better or worse).
Abyss made the combat system way too easy. Hack and slash was enough to win the game (though KH fans should like it, as it was almost as dumbed down as KH and KH2
).
As far as the game itself: Abyss had ridiculously long load times, massive framerate issues, the music was jarring (completely different styles at different points in the game), the graphics were filled with aliasing, and the animation lacked the fluidity of Symphonia (it was jerky). Oh and Luke is an obnoxious little brat and I want to strangle and murder him and then destory his remains.
Conclusion: Tales of the Abyss blows.
