I think Symphonia made the biggest leap only in gameplay because of the 3D aspect. In terms of characters, storyline, and soundtrack, it's a step back compared to some of thep revious titles (IMO). Abyss pretty much took Symphonia's battle system and fixed most of the problems I had with it with the Flex Range LMB system.

Looks like Namco agrees because all 3D Tales games afterwards have used Abyss's system as a basis, including ToS: Ratatoskr Knight.
