I don't know if you've ever played L4D or any other game that hinges on teamwork, but new players can be the worst thing for your team short of a team killer or griefer. I'm more than willing to help out a new player, but competitive modes like Versus or Scavenge probably aren't the best place to learn the ropes. While watching new players on the other team can be funny at times, I prefer playing with people who know the basic gameplay concepts that make it possible to win against the other team and/or clear the campaign.
I mostly play with people on my friends list as I know they probably won't rage quit, they won't hoard supplies for themselves, and will excercise some basic teamwork while understanding some essential things that may escape new players (don't run ahead, don't run off by yourself, throw your molotov at the tank, tell your team if you're black+white, etc).
