I think you need to perform a survey among the community how much they would pay for a subscription. Perhaps have extra's like t-shirts and other goodies? (also insight as to where the figures actually come from?)

Also, I think it would be wiser to (also) put a monthly subscription up, so you can quit every month and therefore not cause trouble with unsatisfied subscribers.
