ioi, I've been thinking this for a while... friends aren't nearly as useful as they should be; you can basically use them to see who's online in your profile. I think some other functions should be included like:
1. Friends' names in the forum posts could be colored differently - green, for instance ( very easy, a checkup on the database and the rest is up to the CSS 
)
2. Users online : there could be the members, guests and friends (again, incredibly easy) or even a special pop-up window with a list of your friends online.
Some basic ideas that IMO are very useful and easy to do considering your expertise in PHP and MySQL (probably)...
