Also, they've always had the idea that they have some massive influence over the gaming industry. Matt even said as much a few years ago. Their pride has been damaged because people aren't taking their word as gospel truth. Despite Matt's smear campaign against Wii Music, people bought it. And despite Matt's tears of semen, people are eating up NSMBW.
What it comes down to is that their own arrogance has gotten the best of them and they are no longer relevant.
