I've been using Kate recently and it's pretty much Notepad with highlights. Some enhanced text editors are getting too flashy.
The Windows text editors normally don't come free. I'd pick any Linux and it'd come with at least one free one pre-installed. Free is good. Saves me some moola for gaming.
Any variant of Notepad is good though.
