How many were you taking out off him with the Arrows? Also, did he manage to get you with his spear, or did you run out of arrows and melee'd him?
Edit - Also, make sure that if he does a lots of backward jumps, kite him to go away from the wall. Run towards the stairs, until he's an position that you want.
