How am I bitter? More people would call NSMB the GOTY but this isn't a popularity contest amongst the whole gaming population. Its simply a'core' gamer contest and throw away games with good graphics and shooting tend to win the day. Games which have little staying power shouldn't win GOTY awards, but the gaming press is pretty terrible and has always been terrible at these kinds of things. |
Popularity? Nothing to do with it.. NSMBWii outsold uncharted and is much more widely known over Uncharted. It also can't be a popularity contest between the "core" gaming croud. Modern Warfare 2 on 360 outsold the PS3 version and uncharted 2 combined. It was also the best selling software entertainment media ever.... So, the Popularity thing is BS.
Also, it's not just about story and graphics, but, they play a part as it's the entire overall package, and with excellent graphics, great gameplay, online multiplayer, and lengthy fun, challenging story mode with a good camera and controls certainly make the package better. Playing with four, or more people locally is always hectic for me, I'm always loosing track of who I am, and where I am, and, not only that, but, who really wants to play a mario game together as a family? Chances are, if that happens, two of the players are going to suck balls and make the entire experience easier, less challenging and not very much fun. Adding best family game doesn't do any justice because it just makes the game seem more.... user friendly.. perhaps, too user friendly. Games with no effort to play aren't any fun.
A 2D side scroller will never win game of the year, because that's all the game is... a 2D side scroller, no change of pace, just, everyone run, jump and collect coins.. Just head to the right of the screen, until you get to the end. I've had uncharted since Christmas, and I eventhough I've beaten it, I've not played through all the game's modes yet.
As for the story, though, it was made with quality, the games actions are done by motion capture actors who also provide the voice of the characters. So, you get fluid animations, with great dialog because all the actors were in the same room being recorded at the same time. No one ever said uncharted 2 was all graphics, and story, and no gameplay, you're just trying to put it that way.. Show me a Wii, or a 360 title that does large scale envoirmental changes while keeping gameplay intact and at full speed.... 6 or 7 cars exploding in Grand Theft Auto wont do (and even that would probably cause slow down).
All things aside, you've got to remember that the Wii is an alienated console because of 3rd parties lack of earning money on it, and you can blame Nintendo for not following Sony, and making sure it was so hard to hack, that by the time it is hackable, it wouldn't be worth the effort. If someone's got 70 million bucks to spend, you bet it's going to be put to use, besides, most people want HD gaming, they're just split on their preference, some people want 360, others want PS3, but, regaurdless, of who wants what, they still want more than what the Wii offers. Just a preference, and if Nintendo 64, and Gamecube had done better, Wii wouldn't have had to go off into another croud to gain back their lost money. They'll feel it next gen when they'll see how badly the Wii has hurt them and their image... Wont do a thing but help this generation, but next.... Nintendo better hope for a miracle.
