2009: A Year's Look at Software Sales
by Smeagsy-Weagsy

It's been quite the year hasn't it? I mean, this year we've had the biggest game opening ever as well as the fastest single platform game ever, and everything in between! So I think it'll be fun to take a look at the impressive achievements software has achieved in this last year, and the platforms they achieved them on. After all, we are on a sales website... and although we all love our hardware sales, it's the games that make the consoles. So why not celebrate their successes? I hope you all enjoy!

Let's start out with the big picture: how much total software did each console/handheld sell? So... let's take a look see. ^_^

1st: Wii (184,198,873 +11%)
2nd: DS (147,764,900 -2%)
3rd: 360 (117,415,511 +7%)
4th: PS3 (94,647,218 +20%)
5th: PSP (37,050,139 -1%)

Well, while DS sold the most hardware this year, Wii sold the most software by a large margin. And while PS3 also sold more hardware this year than the 360, Microsoft's console still sold more software. Still, It has to be noted that Sony's console saw a large increase of software sales year over year, a 20% increase! Very impressive indeed. And then we have Sony's PSP. Well, you can decide amongst yourselves what you think about the handheld's performance.

Next up we have another interesting figure: Which console added the most million sellers to its catalogue? I'll be taking this information from my Million Sellers Club of 2009 thread (Hooray self promotion!).

1st: Wii (32)
2nd: 360 (31)
3rd: DS (30)
4th: PS3 (24)
5th: PSP (8)

As you can see, it was a close race indeed! In fact, the 360 passed DS in the last week of sales for 2009, which is quite an achievement for the console. 360 and PS3 were neck and neck for the longest time, but the holiday season was great for the 360, who saw some great games hit the million mark. Still, Wii saw the most new million sellers added to it's stable, while the DS saw another fine haul in it's 5th year of sales. PS3 was one game away from hitting 50 total million sellers, and PSP continued to struggle until the end of the year when it saw some big sellers like Gran Turismo.

Now let's take a look at the amount of games (old and new) that sold at least a million units this year (doesn't need to be a brand new million seller).

1st: 360 (29)
2nd: DS (23)
3rd: Wii (19)
4th: PS3 (18)
5th: PSP (2)

Here's where the 360 was the big winner. While some individual Wii games sold oodles and oodles (we'll get to that later), the 360 was the system that "shared the wealth". 29 individual games sold over a million units on the system, which is definitely no small feat. DS took second place, and PS3 and Wii were suprisingly neck and neck (surprising in that even though Wii sold 90,000,000 more units of hardware, it still only had one more game that sold a million units this year). PSP struggled to see games sell over a million this year, with only Monster Hunter and Gran Turismo achieving the feat.

Finally, let's take a look at the top 10's for this past year. The top 10 Wii/DS/360/PS3/PSP games, as well as the overall top 10.
