I started the game ran thru the tutorial and then ended up in the nexus, from their i went to boletaria palace as it was the only place i could go to.  I have been wanting to level up but i cant seem to find the maid in black or whatever her name is.. do i have to complete boletaria palace first to do this?

Hi, i'm very glad you're enjoying the game, even though it's not a graphical powerhouse, it looks nice and plays like a godly RPG :D

About your problem, you'll only need to finish that specific stage and defeat the boss at the end of it in order for the Maiden In Black to appear in the Nexus once more. Once you beat the boss, she'll appear and ask you to do a certain task inside the Nexus, once you've done that, talk to her a second time, and she'll ask you if you want to seek soul power, answer yes.

Now you can start leveling up ;)
