It was ranked so well more because it was the kind of Mario game the critics wanted (3D gameplay, variety of gameplay, and flashy graphics). Not claiming the game is bad (don't have a copy yet, but what I played I like), just that it's not the game the mainstream wants.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
