Was Activision right to not pick up Brutal Legend in retrospect?

I blanched when I read how much they'd given Tim Schaefer to make a game. Don't mistake me, I love the guy to death, and I want him to keep making games, but he doesn't exactly light up the sales chart. So I wasn't shocked when Activision dumped him. I wasn't even that surprised when they sued.
