It is easier than 4-1, did you read the rest of my advice saying that you have to keep your shields up all the time? :P
If you found that hard, just wait until 2-2, those pickaxe miners will rip you to shreads in less than two hits >_<

Just wait until you get further down the game :) I found 1-1 to be extremely easy as well on NG+, but it was after that, that I felt the full difficulty of NG+, especially on boss battles.

You'll need at least 200 arrows to kill the red Dragon, and that's counting that you have at least 12 Dexterity and don't miss too many arrows.
