Old sonic or Old Mario Which is Better?

Old Mario by a mile. Sonic was a flash in the pan and was only as popular as he was because Sega fans needed something/someone to hang their hopes on and because he was a 'cooler' alternative to Mario. I was never that impressed by any of the games. They were good, but rarely great.
