Back on topic:

To the OP, several things would have to happen for PS3 to clear 2nd place: Natal would have to flop, Microsoft's next price drop can't have a significant impact, and the PS3 has to have some stellar system sellers in 2010. All of these are possible, I just don't think the former two are likely, though I don't think Natal will be HUGE either, but it won't flop.

 

This.  If the generation is defined as when the next system releases, I think this will be the case.

 

However, I do see Sony continuning to develop for the platform into the next cycle while MS may not be dropping on the fly, but they will probably try to expedite development for tne next console.  The only evidence is purely historical.

 

To lay my prediction down.  If generation is defined as total systems sold from launch to launch of next console, then MS will probably be in 2nd place.  If it's defined as total sales from launch to end of production, I see Sony taking 2nd.  no one but nintendo will get 1st.
