What? The games have sold progressively better? Layton 4's actually the first to have a weaker debut than the last, but I'm hoping it has longer legs thanks to the London Life mode.

Uh, they've sold progressively worse. Screw openings, lifetime sales are what matters.

You can't compare lifetimes though, since we don't have the top 500 for 2009 yet. If you compare charted sales (ie: the only metric we have for a like vs like comparison) then Layton 3 > Layton 2 > Layton 1.
Layton 4 is lagging 3 though, but it's still on par with 2.

But games die off fairly quickly in Japan. I severely doubt more numbers would make a notable difference, if any at all.
Yeah, opening weeks have gone up, but lifetime sales have gone down. Layton 4 seems to be trending to change that, and surpass Layton 3's lifetime sales. That's what I think it looks like anyway. Despite having a lower opening.

Layton 1 sold ~200k off the charts. That's the point, Layton does move considerable units consistently outside the top 30, and new releases actually tend to bump up sales for the older games (as do discounted prices). You can't really say ltds are declining because frankly, we don't know if that's actually the case yet. When all's said and done, it's likely ltds will be Layton 3 > 2 >1 as well.
