See how awesome Cloud is!

Not really.
And its already been established that pretty much all of the Playstation protagonists (except maybe Zidane) used Cloud as a model. Because Nomura has no originality and keeps using the same 5 stock character archetypes (and look) for all his characters. In this way, the fact that Squall actually broke away from the look and self-centered, brooding (whiny) archetype of Cloud is actually a major step in the evolution of Final Fantasy and makes him a unique character. One that didn't last, as we later got characters like Tidus and Vaan.
Its just hillarious that everyone focuses on Squall as being the 'Whiny' one when its most of the other FF protagonists who do the whining and Squall is the one who is the man who actually stepped forward and took command early on. In fact, Cloud, Tidus and Vaan never took command of anything.

Cloud did take lead, he just bitched out after he found out he was a Sephiroth clone, and became even more "emo". Squall started off on one extreme and then changed and became leader because Cid knew he had it in him, and Xu, Quistis, agreed. Though Squall still needed help from his friends(Which is the standard japanese story when it comes to anime people in school) and made the story better later on for when he finally accepted that he wants friends. And then they were all taken away from him again. Not much luck Squall has...

Uh...what parts did Cloud take the lead? Not as lead of the party, in the story or even of his own life. COuntless times over the game, he even was upstaged by cinematics or OTHER party members in making his own decisions. And do I even need to go into the multiple parts where you lose control of Cloud and he 'dissapears'? The ONLY way you can say he ever 'took the lead' of anything was his final decision to face Sephiroth...which in itself wasn't even a choice on his part. The rest of the game, he was either running from choices, his past or himself internally. And nearly every other character in the game had PLENTY of chances in the game to show him up as a better character in the 'lead' role in both your party and just the very fact that they're the ones telling Cloud to stop whining and face himself. In the end, the whole character interaction and even plot came down to the fact that Cloud was a broekn person who was running away from himself and had to face his destiny. And if THAT isn't the epitome of emo/whiny, then I don't know what is.
Squall never needed anyone else to tell him what to do except one person, Rinoa. Quistis introgected into his character, Zell gave him useful tips for where he needed to go, Selphie....well, she was cute. But only Rinoa actually influenced him to change as a character and told him he wasn't being true to himself. And allowed him to open up to everyone else. Which was the whole point of the game. As much as people don't want to admit it, and as much as the creators even SAID it, the point of FFVIII was about 'Friendship and love'. And this is why Squall is often pegged with the 'weak and whiny' stereotype while Cloud is given the 'badass awesome' stereotype. Oh no, there's no way some dude with 24 inch hair and a 6 foot sword could EVER be emo and whiny! But that dude who showed his feelings and fell in love, yeah, he totally was a bitch.
