Thats just the thing, the "hardcore" are far, far from being mature. So playing "manly" and "cool" games somehow compensates for that. 

Talking about how you'd react to your best friend becoming a girl in a mature way is mature.

It is actually what Tween boys think, just as they are going into puberty, rather than adults who actually have to do things like work for a living, and also pay taxes (and buy health insurance so they don't have to go to jail).
