Since the Wii can tell when you're getting closer or further from the TV by measuring the distance between the dots on the sensor bar, I don't think that varying your distance from the TV should have any effect on a properly calibrated Wii.

I very rarely sit right in front of the TV either, what with my 3m wide couch. And on a 4 player match, we can't all be facing the TV on the same angle. Besides, measuring the distance between dots isn't going to be that accurate on a 0.8MP camera.

I can see the point of having a setup option to indicate the "size" of your TV. That would cover the big problems people have with the current implementation, which steem from really big projection screens and such. It's not something I really need with my average sized TV, but yeah that would be useful for odd-sized TVs.

However, I still think it's the right decision for Nintendo to have left the details of pixel-perfect aiming for the few games that need it. Seriously, what about dual player rail-shooters? How can you get pixel-accuracy for both players sitting at different angles from the TV, at possibly different distances (and even at varying positions on each playthrough) without it being an in game setting?

Ah, yes, you're quite right. Odd angles would stymie the calibration.
