Great sales.

NSMB sold me on the DS. If I didn't have LBP, I would definitely be getting a Wii + NSMBWii.

What I don't understand is why LBP sales are nowhere near NSMBs sales. Platform marketshare does not account for this. Mario factor?

The simplest explanation is that NSMBWii is the better platformer right out of the box. LBP has a level editor to make up for this, but that is not something for the everyday casual user really. Plus those levels can be epicly good, or epicly bad. Mario levels are universally done by the guys who have defined the genre.

Not to say that LBP is a bad game mind you. I don't really have any first hand experience with it. This is just logical deduction based on the features that are most heavily promoted with each game. Anyone who expected the two to sell equally just didn't understand the market I would guess. Both were an amazing success though.

I have to agree that out-of-the-box, Mario games have had a higher quality of level design (again, I cannot speak for NSMBWii as I have not played it).  And you do not need to know how to use the level editor to enjoy other levels - you can play any level available through the "Community" menu item.

And I wasn't expecting them to sell equally, but NSMBWii is selling so well as if they're giving away real gold coins with each game.
