Basically Nintendo told them nothing.
Even if it turned out that Nintendo did all those of those things the fact that Nintendo produce rarely breaks means less will be thrown away in the first place, generally things like the NES/SNES/N64 get put into peoples attics/lofts.
And of course without even reading the article we know the Wii uses 1/10th of the electricity either of the other two consoles do when turned on, and when in standby about 1/2....and with WC24 i think it was something like 3 times the others in standby (though i have no idea what PS3 uses when folding@home)
