Not necessarily. Nukem is clearly self-parody, something i support. That was just the only example i could think of. I'm more against the Kratos/Marcus Fenix school of badassery. |
I as well am fine with Duke Nukem and other satirically gorey games as well.
I kind of see Stof's point. While I really enjoy God of War I found Kratos's behavior extremely ridiculous at times for the sake of being "awesome" and unlike MadWorld or No More Heroes the gore isn't trying to be comical it's trying to be serious, which is kinda silly. I thought the same of Gears of War, but since I hated the gameplay in that I never managed to finish it unlike God of War.
That said, I am guessing in Stof's head he is taking this way too far to include any violent action game or shooter that isn't satirical like Halo, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, InFamous, Mass Effect, etc. which is a mistake. While they are built around a specific "cool" style and a certain degree of momentum and action, they don't aim for some specific amount of gore or a meathead murderer main character.
Also, despite my distaste for the styles of Gears of War and other similar "look at how awesomely gorey this is" types of games, I do not think they should die. As long as someone enjoys any genre I hope it's always present for those people to play it. After all even if all those games are targeted at teenage boys they have just as much rights to play what they enjoy as children, adults, and women.
