well, the reason I think it would work best is because it is hard to hold a reasonable conversation with 4-5 people over the phone without everyone constantly jumping all over each other. Even if everyone is trying to be polite, you'll have a whole lot of instances you'll have to edit out where people start talking at the same exact time. Now, everyone in the same room is a little easier to manage, as you can see when someone is going to talk (or itching to talk) so not everyone will start talking at the same time.
debate style is a little more controlled in the flow of who speaks when, of course there will be the occasional outburst where someone decides they want to interject, which makes things interesting.

This is very true. The idea I initially had was that everyone would have topics about which they'd speak first (they'd each have a few minuts to talk about whatever they want), then we could get a conversation going. I'll consider this debate format, but it might be something I try to implement after the first podcast or two, so I can get a feel for how it's going to go.

You could do video skype to add a visual element to it (not to the podcast itself, merely the recording of it), so that it can be a more manageable conversation.
